Everyone knows that it’s important to look after yourself, there’s no question about that. You can’t pour from an empty cup. I’m sure we all know that saying. But how many of us are actually really looking after ourselves? I know that a lot of times I forget about myself.
The last few weeks have been quite busy for me and to be honest, I haven’t looked after myself very much, as much as my intention was there. One of my intentions for this year was to attend workshops on a more regular basis to get some time out and just having a couple of hours to switch off. So, over Christmas, I booked myself on a three and half hours day retreat. By the time I got to attend the workshop last weekend I was so glad I booked it as I was starting to run myself down again.
Sunday came, and as per usual me, I was so busy in the morning that I had to run out of the door to get my train into London. When I walked out of the door, it was sleeting. I didn’t even notice that when I was at home. The closer I got to London, the more snow came down. That didn’t bother me though. It was quite nice. I just enjoyed being able to take some time out for myself and re-charge.
Once I got to the venue, I watched a film crew outside filming some stunts and preparing for the next scene (unrelated to the retreat, just random filming in the streets). Again, I was just in the moment and didn’t let myself get stressed. Inside, the venue was incredible, a little oasis of peace and heaven. I grabbed a mat, sat down and just chilled. I love taking new things and surroundings in and just absorb them.
The yoga was absolutely incredible. An hour of yin yoga (which I’ve never done before) followed by a gong bath. It was the first time I went to a gong bath but it was something that I’ve always wanted to do. For the majority of the time I wasn’t sure if I liked it but right at the end, I could feel the difference it made to me. I felt so good after the session, completely calm and relaxed, forgetting all stresses. We then had a bit of a finger painting session and some incredible food.
This was the perfect afternoon for me to reset myself and take care of myself. (Granted, it’s Tuesday and my stress levels are up again, but you have to take care of yourself) I do quite often forget how important it is to look after myself. I just seem to take my health (body and mind) for granted. But one of my big things this year is to take time out to recharge the batteries, in whatever way that may be. There is another day retreat in March, which I can’t wait to join. I think I will need to take a break by then. If you have the chance to join a day retreat or just do anything to look after yourself, do it! Your body and mind will thank you.
